The Shelter

shelter logo The Sheltershelter interior 300x213 The ShelterBastrop County’s animal program began in 1998.   At the time only two agencies – one county and one city – serviced 869 square miles.   We started out in a ratty barn, made what tools we needed by hand, and had support from the local Humane Society that donated cages and equipment over the last decade and continue to add new programs and services.  Our facilities now include 90 large indoor/outdoor canine runs in 3 buildings and 28 cat cages.   We also use pop-up cages for overflows of cats, kittens, small dogs and puppies in our main building.   We’re able to house just about any animal, bird or reptile.  We are planning to add a new cat room and a small dog room.

We love volunteers that are willing to get dirty, raise funds, walk dogs, or sit at the phone and computer for hours.

Hours of Operation

The Bastrop County Animal Shelter is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. We are closed Sunday and Monday and on all Bastrop County holidays.   Reclaims and drop-offs are by appointment when the shelter is not open.

Adoption Process

Our pets can be viewed online at Petango.com or, better yet, come into the shelter and select your forever friend in person.  For animals that are ready to be adopted, an application is required and references can be checked.   In some cases, animals can go home the same day they are selected.   If possible, it’s best to bring in your other pet(s) and children to help us assess the compatibility of your new companion with the rest of your family.
