Free Spay/Neuter and Vaccination Clinic a Success!

Through a partnership between the Bastrop County Animal Shelter and EMANCIPE+, our new free Spay/Neuter Program kicked off on Saturday, January 21, 2012 in the Stoney Point neighborhood. This new program is for those who want to be responsible and sterilize their pet, but for whatever reason are unable to afford to do so. Funding for this program is provided by private donations to Friends of Bastrop County Animal Shelter.

The Emancipe+ mobile veterinary van showed up bright and early on Saturday morning and were greeted by enthusiastic residents that either had spay/neuter appointments or were wanting to get their pets vaccinated—all free of charge.

“These services are for clients who cannot afford the low-cost options available at local clinics” says Troy Walters, Shelter Director at the Bastrop County Animal Shelter. “Our intent is to focus on underserved neighborhoods in Bastrop County. For every pet we spay or neuter, we prevent the birth of unwanted puppies or kittens with no place to call home. Spaying and neutering can reverse the trend in pet homelessness, and there are big advantages for both the pet and pet parent.”

It was a very successful day---14 female dogs were spayed, 8 male dogs neutered, 6 female cats, and 7 male cats received the free surgery and vaccinations. Countless others received free vaccinations throughout the day.

We appreciate the warm welcome that we received by the Stoney Point neighborhood, and we’re looking forward to the next clinic!  Special thanks to the Duron Grocery Store for allowing us to use their parking lot for the clinic!
