NEW Medical Care Fund Helps Save Lives

Ray Charles (RC) arrived at the Bastrop County Animal Shelter (BCAS) as a stray in December 2011, and was suffering from entropion in both eyes. Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid turns inward so that the eyelashes and skin rub against the eye surface, causing irritation and discomfort. Left untreated, entropion can cause damage to the cornea, which can lead to vision loss.

The good news is that it is treatable. Thanks to the top-notch veterinary staff at Animal Trustees of Austin (ATA), RC received the necessary surgery to repair his eyelids. Our good friends at Blue Dog Rescue will be fostering him during his recovery, and he will be available for adoption soon from Blue Dog Rescue.

Carla is another great example of how we are able to change the life of a deserving animal with necessary medical treatment. Carla had a fractured growth plate in the lower part of her right front leg. Growth plates are the softer parts of a dog’s bones, where growth occurs. Growth plate fractures need immediate treatment because they can affect how the bone will grow. An improperly treated growth plate fracture could result in a fractured bone ending up more crooked or shorter than its opposite limb. But the great news is that with proper treatment, most growth plate fractures heal without complications.

Carla received the necessary surgery at ATA and is recovering well in her new home! Carla's new mom heard about her and just knew that he was meant to be a part of the family. Carla will continue to receive the necessary medical care that she will need until she is fully healed.  And, she'll be doing so in a loving home!

Spice arrived at the shelter with a severely injured eye.  After an assessment by veterinarians, it was determined that the eye had sustained too much damage to be saved.  The eye was surgically removed and Spice has recovered beautifully!  He is now available for adoption and hoping to meet his forever family soon!

RC, Carla, and Spice are just three of the animals we have been able to help recently.  The Bastrop County Animal Shelter provides life-saving medical procedures to adoptable animals whenever possible. But, these services can be very expensive. Thanks to donations, we have been able to help these animals, but we want to be able to help more!
