Breezy

When I first laid eyes on this big beautiful white dog, she was sitting in the front corner of her kennel, not making any eye contact. She was very under weight, with her tail between her legs and a look on her face seeming to ask, “How did I get here?” When she finally timidly looked up and I saw those very sad light brown eyes, I knew she was the one!

The shelter staff didn’t know much about her, only that she was found going through trash trying desperately to find food. By the looks of her she has had at least one litter of puppies. It’s hard to think about what may have happened to her babies – prime example of why we should all spay and neuter.

We named her Breezy, after a beloved family horse, and with her demeanor at the time, it fit. After her first vet check she was found to be heartworm positive, and on the x-rays of her heart they also discovered pellets. She had been hit by shot four times that we could see. Breezy received the heartworm treatment, was spayed, vaccinated and physically got much better! There were other scars that were not visible to the eye that told their own story through her reactions to people. I’m guessing that she was not treated very kindly by humans – she was terrified at first, she wouldn’t look at you, wouldn’t eat or play or come out of her kennel, but slowly, with consistent patience, reassurance and love she came out of her shell!

Today she is like a different dog! Don’t pass the timid ones up because they are stand-offish, they WILL come around and when they do you will have a loyal friend for life. Breezy has the sweetest sprit I have ever seen. One day she carried a two day old fawn that she had found in the woods to the house. She was so gentle with that baby, holding it like a puppy. One of the girls at the shelter that has experience with deer is raising that baby today. When we decided to adopt a dog from the Bastrop County Animal Shelter we had no idea that we would be saving more than one life. Our decision to adopt was the best decision ever. Breezy has turned out to be a loving and wonderful member of our family.
